HOOD POET

HOOD POET, the fourth studio album by Polo G, was officially released on August 9, 2024, under Columbia Records. The album marks a significant moment in Polo G’s career, following the success of his deluxe edition Hall of Fame 2.0 and his earlier studio efforts. The title HOOD POET—an acronym for “He Overcame Obstacles During Pain Or Emotional Trauma” reflects Polo G’s journey and personal struggles, offering a deep and introspective exploration of his life experiences.

Initially, HOOD POET was teased as a collaborative project with renowned producer Southside, generating significant buzz within the music community. However, the project eventually evolved into a solo album. Polo G began hinting at the album through social media and promotional activities, including posters with lyrics and QR codes, which built anticipation among fans.

The album’s promotional rollout began in earnest with the release of the lead single, “Distraction,” on June 3, 2022. The track, accompanied by a trailer featuring YouTuber Kai Cenat, set the tone for the album with its introspective lyrics and melodic hooks. “Distraction” achieved commercial success, charting at number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following this, Polo G continued to tease the album with singles like “Barely Holdin’ On,” which was released on August 18, 2023. Despite its initial success, the track peaked at number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100. The third single, “Angels in the Sky,” and the fourth single, “We Uh Shoot,” featuring Lil Durk, were also released, further promoting the album and adding to its growing hype.

The album’s production features a diverse roster of contributors, including Southside, Allen Ritter, and Smatt Sertified, with additional input from ATL Jacob, Cubeatz, Dr. Luke, Dru DeCaro, Fridayy, Nick Papz, Noah Goldstein, Pink Slip, TM88, and Zack Bia. This team of producers ensures a rich and varied soundscape for the album, blending Polo G’s melodic rap style with contemporary production techniques.

HOOD POET was initially slated for a September 15, 2023, release, but its launch was delayed due to Polo G’s legal issues. On August 23, 2023, he was arrested alongside his brother on charges including kidnapping, armed robbery, and possession of an illegal firearm, which resulted in the postponement of the album’s release. Despite this setback, Polo G remained committed to the album’s completion, announcing a new release date of August 9, 2024, in January 2024.

Upon its release, HOOD POET was supported by an extensive promotional campaign, including a 24-hour livestream and the release of the official music video for “Darkside,” one of the album’s standout tracks. The album features guest appearances from a range of artists, including 42 Dugg, Fridayy, Future, GloRilla, G Herbo, Hunxho, Offset, Lil Durk, and The Kid Laroi, adding depth and variety to the project.

HOOD POET showcases Polo G’s continued evolution as an artist, reflecting his ability to blend personal narrative with broader social commentary.
