Dion Marquise Hayes, better known as 42 Dugg, is an American rapper and songwriter hailing from Detroit, Michigan. Born on November 25, 1994, he grew up on the city’s east side, where he was exposed to both the struggles and the raw energy of Detroit’s streets. Though he attended Denby High School, he eventually dropped out and found himself caught up in a fast-paced lifestyle that would later shape his music.

At just 15 years old, 42 Dugg was sentenced to six years in prison for carjacking. During his time behind bars, he turned to music as an outlet, developing a signature style that blends hard-hitting street narratives with melodic flows. After his release, he adopted the moniker “42 Dugg,” with “42” representing a numerical set associated with his neighborhood. Determined to turn his life around, he dove headfirst into music, refining his craft and making a name for himself in Detroit’s underground rap scene.

His breakthrough came in 2019 with the mixtape Young and Turnt, featuring the hit single “You Da One.” The project caught the attention of Lil Baby and Yo Gotti, leading to a major co-sign and a record deal with 4 Pockets Full (4PF), Collective Music Group (CMG), and Interscope Records. Collaborating with Lil Baby on tracks like “Grace” and “We Paid,” 42 Dugg quickly rose to mainstream prominence. “We Paid” became a massive hit, peaking in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and earning a multi-platinum certification.

Building on his success, he dropped Young & Turnt 2 in 2020, which made its way onto the Billboard 200, solidifying his place in the rap game. In 2021, he released Free Dem Boyz, a deeply personal mixtape dedicated to his incarcerated friends, featuring standout tracks like “4 Da Gang” with Roddy Ricch. Despite facing legal troubles, including a 2023 arrest for failing to serve a previous sentence, 42 Dugg remains a powerful force in hip-hop. His ability to blend authenticity with infectious melodies continues to set him apart in the ever-evolving rap landscape.
