About VERBAL

VERBAL, born Ryu Yeong-gi on August 21, 1975, in Tokyo, Japan, is a trailblazer in the Japanese hip-hop scene. As a third-generation Zainichi Korean, he has left an indelible mark on music, fashion, and entertainment in Japan. His musical career began in the early ’90s when he formed the rap-rock group N.M.D. with Taku Takahashi. Despite attracting offers from major labels, VERBAL initially pursued a degree in philosophy and marketing at Boston College. Yet, his passion for hip-hop led him to co-found the influential hip-hop group m-flo in 1998, alongside Takahashi and vocalist Lisa. m-flo became known for their dynamic hits like “How You Like Me Now?” and “Come Again,” propelling them to national success.

VERBAL’s reach expanded further when he co-founded the hip-hop collective Teriyaki Boyz in 2005. The group gained international recognition, particularly for their collaboration with major artists such as Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk, and their appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. This brought them global fame and cemented their place in both the Japanese and international music scenes.

Beyond music, VERBAL has significantly impacted the fashion world, collaborating with some of the most prestigious brands and artists. His work across various creative industries showcases his versatile influence and highlights his unique position as a leading figure in Japan’s cultural landscape.
