Shai 

Shai is an American R&B group formed in 1990 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., consisting of Marc Gay, Carl Martin, Darnell Van Rensalier, and Garfield Bright. Their name, “Shai,” comes from a Swahili word meaning “personification of destiny,” reflecting their path to success.

The group rose to fame with their debut single, “If I Ever Fall in Love,” released in 1992. The song became a massive hit, reaching number two on the U.S. charts and selling over two million copies. Their debut album, also titled If I Ever Fall in Love, dropped the same year and featured other hits like “Comforter” and “Baby I’m Yours,” both of which peaked in the top ten of the U.S. charts.

In 1993, Shai received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist and even performed at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, further cementing their place in music history. The group continued to release music with albums like Blackface in 1995, which included the R&B Top 20 hit “Come With Me,” and contributed the track “The Place Where You Belong” to the Beverly Hills Cop III soundtrack.

Shai’s signature style is built on smooth harmonies and heartfelt ballads, blending a cappella arrangements with contemporary R&B. Their impact on the genre in the early ’90s remains influential, and their music continues to inspire artists today.
