Tyler Gregory Okonma, known professionally as Tyler, The Creator, is an American rapper, producer, and entrepreneur who emerged as a major force in alternative hip hop in the 2010s. Born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, he grew up with a unique creative spirit, drawing his first imaginary album covers as a young child and teaching himself to play piano by age 14. Tyler’s early life was shaped by a challenging family dynamic; he never met his Nigerian father and was raised by his mother, who is of African American and Canadian descent. These experiences, along with his eclectic tastes, became foundations of his distinct and often experimental approach to art and music.

In 2007, Tyler co-founded the hip hop collective Odd Future, a group known for its unorthodox style, dark humor, and defiance of industry norms. Odd Future was heavily influenced by the internet culture of the time, releasing music on platforms like Tumblr, Myspace, and YouTube, where they quickly built a devoted fan base. The group’s influence on hip hop and streetwear was immense, helping to bring skate culture and streetwear brands like Supreme into the mainstream. Tyler’s leadership within Odd Future and his work as both a rapper and producer gained him widespread attention, particularly after the release of his debut album Bastard in 2009. This self-produced project, with its horrorcore aesthetic and provocative lyrics, was a precursor to his official breakout album, Goblin (2011), which received critical acclaim and launched his single “Yonkers.” The music video for “Yonkers,” where Tyler memorably eats a cockroach, attracted controversy and helped cement his status as a controversial yet compelling artist.

As Tyler’s career progressed, his music evolved significantly. Moving away from the horrorcore influences of his early albums, he embraced more accessible and melodic sounds on his third album, Wolf (2013), blending jazz, R&B, and soul into his work. This shift continued with Cherry Bomb (2015), where he experimented with aggressive, noisy production techniques, dividing fans and critics. However, Tyler reached new creative heights with Flower Boy (2017), a deeply personal album that explored themes of love, identity, and self-acceptance, marking a turning point in his artistic maturity.

His next two albums, Igor (2019) and Call Me If You Get Lost (2021), further solidified his position as a transformative figure in music. Both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album, showcasing his versatility as a rapper and producer. In 2024, he released Chromakopia, an album marked by its introspective themes and collaborations, underscoring his continuous reinvention as an artist.

Beyond music, Tyler has made significant contributions to fashion and media. He founded the streetwear brand Golf Wang and the music festival Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, both of which reflect his bold and colorful aesthetic. Tyler’s collaborations with brands like Converse, Lacoste, and Louis Vuitton have further cemented his influence on modern fashion. He has also directed all his own music videos under the pseudonym Wolf Haley, contributing to his image as an artist who maintains complete creative control over his work.

Tyler, The Creator’s career is a testament to his ability to evolve continuously while defying expectations. From his beginnings in Odd Future to his Grammy wins and success in fashion, Tyler has redefined what it means to be an artist, leaving an indelible mark on hip hop and culture at large.
