aespa is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment, debuting on November 17, 2020, with the single Black Mamba. The group consists of four members: Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning. aespa is recognized for pioneering a unique concept of merging virtual reality and the metaverse with music. Their virtual “ae” avatars serve as counterparts to each member, embodying the group’s concept of “Avatar X Experience” (Æ), which refers to the interaction between two worlds. This innovative approach, coupled with their hyperpop musical style, quickly propelled them to international fame, establishing aespa as a fresh force within the K-pop industry.

aespa’s debut single, Black Mamba, achieved record-breaking views within its first 24 hours, marking the most-viewed debut music video for a K-pop group at the time. Their follow-up single, Next Level, released in May 2021, cemented their status as rising stars. The song garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number two on the Circle Digital Chart and receiving the Daesang for Song of the Year at the Korean Music Awards. In October 2021, aespa released their first EP, Savage, which debuted at number 20 on the US Billboard 200, a remarkable feat for a rookie K-pop girl group. The title track, Savage, also achieved significant success in South Korea, making it to the top of the charts and earning aespa their first perfect all-kill—a term used when a song tops all major Korean music charts simultaneously.

In July 2022, aespa released their second EP, Girls, which set a new record as the best-selling album by a K-pop girl group and became the first to sell one million copies in its initial week. Girls debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, marking aespa’s first top-ten entry on the US chart and further proving their growing international appeal. Their third EP, My World, released in May 2023, crossed two million sales and landed them another top-ten spot on the Billboard 200. In 2024, aespa released their first full-length album, Armageddon, preceded by the lead single Supernova, which became their first song to top the Circle Digital Chart and marked a significant international achievement, reaching the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart’s top ten.

The group’s popularity is further evident in their endorsements and brand collaborations. aespa became the first K-pop artists to represent luxury fashion house Givenchy in February 2021. They have since partnered with brands like Clio, Mediheal, Acqua di Parma, and MLB, among others, showcasing their broad appeal beyond music and into the fashion and lifestyle sectors. In September 2023, they continued their successful run by releasing their fifth EP, Whiplash.
