The Kooks

The Kooks are an English indie rock band that formed in Brighton in 2004. Known for their infectious melodies and Britpop-inspired sound, the band originally featured Luke Pritchard (vocals/guitar), Hugh Harris (lead guitar), Paul Garred (drums), and Max Rafferty (bass). Blending elements of rock, reggae, and post-punk revival, The Kooks quickly carved out a place in the UK music scene.

Their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out (2006), became a massive success, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart and selling over two million copies worldwide. Packed with indie anthems like “Naïve,” “She Moves in Her Own Way,” and “Ooh La,” the record became a defining soundtrack for the mid-2000s indie era.

The band kept their momentum with follow-up albums: Konk (2008) debuted at number one in the UK, followed by Junk of the Heart (2011), Listen (2014), and Let’s Go Sunshine (2018). Each release saw the group exploring new sounds while maintaining their core identity. Their 2022 album 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark marked a stylistic shift with more synth-driven, electronic textures.

In 2025, The Kooks returned with Never/Know, a record that blends their familiar indie rock style with fresh influences, channeling the energy of bands like The Police and The White Stripes. Tracks like “Sunny Babe” and “Tough At The Top” highlight their continued evolution.

Despite lineup changes over the years, founding members Pritchard and Harris have kept the spirit of The Kooks alive. Their ability to adapt without losing their signature charm has helped them maintain a devoted global fanbase.
