Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol is a Northern Irish–Scottish rock band formed in 1994 in Dundee, Scotland. The lineup originally consisted of Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), Michael Morrison, and Mark McClelland. After a brief stint under the name Shrug, they changed their name to Polarbear in 1996, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot in 1997. Following the departure of Morrison, the band officially adopted the name Snow Patrol. Jonny Quinn joined as drummer later that year, marking the beginning of a more stable lineup.

Their first two albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It’s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), were released through independent label Jeepster Records. Despite critical acclaim, these albums failed to achieve commercial success. In 2002, they signed with Polydor Records, and Nathan Connolly joined as lead guitarist. This pivotal change set the stage for their breakthrough.

Snow Patrol’s major-label debut, Final Straw, was released in 2003 and featured the hit single “Run,” which catapulted them to national fame and became an anthem of the post-Britpop era. The album was certified five times platinum in the UK, solidifying their place in the music scene. Following a successful tour, they released their next album, Eyes Open, in 2006, which included the iconic track “Chasing Cars.” This song gained immense popularity, notably featured in the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, and has since been recognized as one of the most-played songs on UK radio in the 21st century.

The band’s success continued with the release of A Hundred Million Suns in 2008 and Fallen Empires in 2011, both of which further established their international presence. However, the group faced challenges as Quinn and Wilson left in 2023, leaving Lightbody as the only remaining original member. Despite these changes, Snow Patrol announced plans for a new album in 2024, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to their music.

Throughout their career, Snow Patrol has received numerous accolades, including seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and nominations for six Brit Awards and a Grammy. Their combination of emotional lyrics and melodic instrumentation has resonated with fans worldwide, resulting in over ten million copies sold across their major albums.

The band’s early years were marked by a struggle for recognition. After being dropped by Jeepster Records, Snow Patrol faced financial difficulties and the pressures of the music industry. However, they persevered, with Lightbody even selling part of his record collection to keep the band afloat. Their low point included a disheartening performance to just eighteen people at a strip club, an experience that became a humorous anecdote in their later performances.

With their breakthrough, Snow Patrol’s music evolved, embracing a more polished sound while retaining their indie roots. Their live performances, marked by an emotional connection to their audience, have made them a beloved act at festivals and concerts worldwide.
