Steven Umoh, better known as Obongjayar, is a Nigerian-born, London-based artist who has carved a unique space for himself in the music world. Born on October 16, 1989, in Calabar, Nigeria, Obongjayar was raised by his grandmother while his mother moved to the UK to escape an abusive relationship. His early influences were rooted in American hip-hop, with artists like Eminem, Usher, Nelly, Snoop Dogg, and Ciara shaping his early musical style. Initially adopting an American accent in his singing, he later embraced his Nigerian-British heritage, singing in his natural accent and blending the two cultures in his music.

Obongjayar moved to England at 17 to reunite with his mother and quickly immersed himself in the UK’s music scene. His career began on SoundCloud, where he attracted the attention of Richard Russell of XL Recordings. In 2016, he released his debut EP Home, followed by Bassey in 2017. Both EPs showcased his fusion of Afrobeat rhythms with themes of spirituality and politics, setting the stage for his unique sound.

Obongjayar’s collaborations with artists like Danny Brown, Little Simz, and Fred Again helped expand his reach. In 2022, he released his debut studio album, Some Nights I Dream of Doors, blending electronic, hip-hop, and West African influences. The album received critical acclaim, including a nomination for Best Album at the Ivor Novello Awards in 2023. Known for his ability to seamlessly transition between rapping, singing, and spoken word, Obongjayar’s music delivers a powerful mix of social commentary and spiritual depth.
