Nathaniel Bassey, born on August 27, 1981, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a renowned gospel musician, pastor, trumpeter, and songwriter. Raised in Lagos by his father, Mr. E. Joshua Bassey, a minister in the Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly, Nathaniel hails from Ikot Ofon Ikono in Akwa Ibom State. His musical journey began in the church, where he developed his passion for music and honed his trumpet skills.
Bassey’s educational path took him to the University of Lagos, where he studied politics and international relations, followed by music studies at Middlesex University Summer School in London. His early musical career saw him joining the Rhodes Orchestra as a trumpeter for two years and collaborating with his childhood friends in the Spectrum 4 jazz quartet.
In 2004, a pivotal moment in his career came when he composed a song during a visit to Stella Obasanjo, the late wife of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. His debut album, Elohim, recorded in Cape Town, South Africa, was released in 2008, featuring the popular track “Someone’s Knocking at the Door.”
Bassey is also known for launching the “Hallelujah Challenge” in June 2017, a global online praise and prayer movement. As the pastor of The Oasis, a youth church of The Redeemed Christian Church of God in Victoria Island, Lagos, he has played a vital role in spreading gospel music and spiritual growth, alongside his wife, Sarah, whom he married in 2013.
