Moses Sumney

Moses Sumney, born on May 19, 1992, in San Bernardino, California, is a Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter and actor renowned for his ethereal voice and genre-blending sound. His upbringing in both Southern California and Accra, Ghana, infused his music with a rich tapestry of cultural influences. At the age of 10, he moved to Ghana with his family, spending his teenage years on a goat farm in Accra. This period of isolation deeply shaped his artistic identity, leading him to create a plethora of a cappella songs. Returning to California at 16, he pursued creative writing at UCLA while nurturing his growing passion for music.

Sumney’s musical journey began with the self-recorded EP Mid-City Island in 2014, followed by Lamentations in 2016. His debut album, Aromanticism (2017), earned critical acclaim for its introspective exploration of emotional complexity and solitude. In 2020, he released græ, a double album that expanded his sonic landscape, delving into themes of identity, vulnerability, and the human experience.

Beyond music, Sumney has ventured into acting, securing roles in HBO’s The Idol and the horror film MaXXXine, both set for release in 2023 and 2024. His unique ability to blend soul, jazz, art-rock, and ambient R&B with personal narrative has made him a standout artist in contemporary music, consistently offering listeners deeply emotional and experimental sounds.
