Chris Stapleton

Chris Stapleton is a highly influential American country singer-songwriter and guitarist, born on April 15, 1978, in Lexington, Kentucky. Stapleton’s music career took off after he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1996, initially to study engineering at Vanderbilt University. However, he soon dropped out to pursue his passion for music, signing a contract with Sea Gayle Music to write and publish his songs.

Stapleton’s talent as a songwriter is evident in the six number-one singles he has co-written on the Hot Country Songs chart. These hits include Kenny Chesney’s “Never Wanted Nothing More,” Josh Turner’s “Your Man,” George Strait’s “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,” and Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer.” His songwriting credits also extend to contributions on albums for major artists like Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Brad Paisley, and Taylor Swift. Stapleton has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow, and Ed Sheeran.

Before establishing himself as a solo artist, Stapleton was the frontman for two bands: the bluegrass group the SteelDrivers and the rock band the Jompson Brothers. His solo debut album, Traveller (2015), was a massive success, topping the US Billboard 200 and earning quadruple platinum certification. His cover of “Tennessee Whiskey” from the same album was particularly notable, achieving diamond certification by the RIAA.

Stapleton continued to build on his success with subsequent albums. From a Room: Volume 1 (2017) earned him a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, and its follow-up, From a Room: Volume 2 (2017), peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. His fourth album, Starting Over (2020), also won a Grammy for Best Country Album, with the title track becoming its lead single.

Throughout his career, Stapleton has received numerous awards, including 10 Grammy Awards, 11 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, and 15 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. He was honored as the ACM’s Artist-Songwriter of the Decade. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him at number 170 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Stapleton’s early life in Staffordsville, Kentucky, and his family’s background in coal mining have deeply influenced his music. He was valedictorian at Johnson Central High School, where he also played football. Despite starting an engineering degree at Vanderbilt University, Stapleton’s true calling was in music, leading him to Nashville and eventually to a highly successful career as a singer-songwriter and performer.
