Billy Strings, born William Lee Apostol on October 3, 1992, in Lansing, Michigan, is a highly acclaimed American guitarist and bluegrass musician whose innovative approach to traditional music has garnered widespread recognition. Raised in a musical environment, Billy was significantly influenced by his stepfather, Terry Barber, an accomplished amateur bluegrass musician who introduced him to the genre’s legends, including Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, and Earl Scruggs. Despite a challenging childhood marked by the loss of his biological father to a heroin overdose and his family’s struggles with methamphetamine addiction, Billy found solace and direction in music.

As a young boy, Billy was drawn to the guitar, and by the age of six, he was joining his stepfather at bluegrass picking parties, honing his skills on the instrument. His aunt, recognizing his prodigious talent across multiple instruments, gave him the nickname “Billy Strings,” a moniker that would later become synonymous with his exceptional musicianship. However, his teenage years saw him exploring different musical paths, including playing in rock and metal bands, influenced by artists like Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath. This period also led him into a dangerous lifestyle of drug abuse, which he eventually left behind, choosing instead to focus on bluegrass and acoustic music.

Billy’s career began to take shape when he moved to Traverse City, Michigan, where he quickly became a standout in the local music scene. His partnership with mandolinist Don Julin, a prominent figure in the bluegrass community, marked a significant turning point. Together, they toured extensively, and Billy began to build a reputation as a bluegrass prodigy. In 2016, he moved to Nashville, the heart of American roots music, where his talent was quickly recognized.

His debut solo album, Turmoil & Tinfoil (2017), showcased his ability to blend traditional bluegrass with elements of rock, jazz, and psychedelia, setting him apart from his contemporaries. His 2019 album, Home, released under Rounder Records, was a breakthrough, earning him the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. In 2021, Billy Strings released Renewal, an album that delved into more personal and darker themes while pushing the boundaries of bluegrass with innovative instrumentation and complex arrangements. In 2022, he released Me/And/Dad, a deeply personal album with his stepfather Terry Barber, celebrating the traditional music that shaped his upbringing.
