About Sierra Ferrell

Sierra Ferrell, born on August 3, 1988, in West Virginia, is an American singer-songwriter and musician renowned for her eclectic fusion of folk, bluegrass, gypsy jazz, and Latin music styles, including tango and calypso. Growing up in a small town, Ferrell’s early life was shaped by the rustic environment around her, especially after her parents divorced when she was five. Living with her mother and a sibling in a trailer, she spent more time outdoors than with electronics, which instilled in her a deep connection with nature and the simple joys of life. Despite hailing from a state with a rich bluegrass tradition, Ferrell’s musical upbringing was eclectic, with her mother’s cassette tapes of artists like 10,000 Maniacs and Tracy Chapman playing a pivotal role in her early influences.

Ferrell’s journey into music began in childhood, where she played the clarinet and sang in school choirs. By her teens, she had learned to play the guitar and even performed Shania Twain covers at a local bar. However, feeling constrained in a Grateful Dead cover band during her teenage years, she decided to carve her own path in music. In her early twenties, Ferrell embraced a nomadic lifestyle, hitchhiking, freighthopping, and living out of her van. This period of wayfaring led her to busk across cities like Seattle and New Orleans, where she developed a deep appreciation for folk music and its various subgenres. During these years, Ferrell faced significant personal challenges, including struggles with drug addiction, which she later overcame, committing herself to a healthier lifestyle and positive relationships.

Ferrell’s musical career began to take shape with the self-release of two albums, Pretty Magic Spell in 2018 and Washington by the Sea in 2019. These albums, along with her YouTube channel, where she posted a mix of covers, original songs, and live performances, helped her gain a modest following. A breakthrough came in 2018 when her song “In Dreams” was featured on the YouTube channel “GemsOnVHS,” attracting millions of views. Her regular performances at Nashville’s “Honky Tonk Tuesdays” also caught the attention of renowned producer Gary Paczosa, leading to a three-album deal with Rounder Records in 2019.

In August 2021, Ferrell released her major label debut, Long Time Coming, which received widespread critical acclaim. Produced by Paczosa and featuring contributions from established bluegrass musicians like Billy Strings and Sarah Jarosz, the album blended freewheeling bluegrass with jazz-inflected elements, earning praise for its unique sound and Ferrell’s distinctive vocal style. The album charted at number 15 on the Billboard Americana/Folk Albums chart and was lauded by critics from Pitchfork, Paste, and Country Music People, among others.

Ferrell’s growing reputation led to collaborations with notable artists such as The Black Keys, Zach Bryan, and Shakey Graves. In 2024, she released her fourth album, Trail of Flowers, which continued to showcase her genre-bending style and garnered further praise. With her vibrant songwriting and the ability to evoke nostalgia while pushing the boundaries of contemporary folk music, Ferrell has established herself as one of the brightest talents in roots music. Now based in Nashville, she continues to captivate audiences with her enchanting live performances and ever-evolving sound, drawing from a rich tapestry of musical influences that span across time and genres.
