Bunji Garlin

Ian Antonio Alvarez, better known by his stage name Bunji Garlin, is a Trinidadian ragga soca artist born on July 14, 1978, in Arima, Trinidad. Often referred to as the “Viking of Soca,” he has made a lasting impact on the genre with his electrifying performances and intricate lyricism. His rise to fame began in the late 1990s, and his unique style quickly set him apart in the vibrant world of soca music.

Bunji gained significant recognition after winning the prestigious Soca Monarch competition multiple times. His early hits like “Down in the Ghetto” (2002) and “Warrior Cry” (2004) showcased his powerful vocals and distinctive sound. One of his most iconic tracks, “Differentology,” released in 2013, earned him the Soul Train Award for Best International Performance, further cementing his place in the global music scene.

In 2006, Bunji married fellow soca artist Fay-Ann Lyons, daughter of the legendary Superblue. Together, they are one of the most influential couples in soca music. They have a daughter, born in 2009, and continue to collaborate professionally.

Beyond his musical career, Bunji’s influence extends to pop culture, including his song “Brrt” being featured in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto IV.
