BOYNEXTDOOR is a South Korean boy band that has rapidly captured the attention of the K-pop industry since its formation by KOZ Entertainment, a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation, in 2023. The group, stylized as BOYNEXTDOOR, is composed of six talented members: Sungho, Riwoo, Jaehyun (who serves as the group’s leader), Taesan, Leehan, and Woonhak. The band made their official debut on May 30, 2023, with the release of their single album Who!.

The name BOYNEXTDOOR encapsulates the group’s concept of being relatable and approachable, embodying the “boy next door” trope with a casual and friendly demeanor. This theme is reflected in their music, which the group describes as “easy listening and natural,” focusing on themes that resonate with everyday life. Members Jaehyun, Taesan, and Woonhak play an active role in the production of their music, contributing to the authenticity of their sound and lyrics.

BOYNEXTDOOR’s debut was marked by a unique promotional strategy, where all three tracks from Who!—”But I Like You,” “One and Only,” and “Serenade”—were released as singles. This approach, uncommon in the K-pop industry, helped the group make an immediate impact. The music video for “But I Like You” was released on May 23, 2023, followed by “One and Only” on May 26, and finally, “Serenade” was released alongside the album on May 30. These tracks introduced fans to the group’s signature sound, characterized by a blend of rock, teen pop, hip hop, hyperpop, and synth-pop influences.

Following their debut, BOYNEXTDOOR continued to build momentum with their first extended play (EP), Why.., released on September 4, 2023. The EP featured six tracks, including the previously released singles from Who! and the new lead single “But Sometimes.” The EP debuted at number 162 on the Billboard 200, marking the group’s first entry on the prestigious chart—a significant achievement for a rookie group. The success of Why.. not only showcased the group’s musical versatility but also solidified their presence in the global music scene.

The narrative arc of BOYNEXTDOOR’s music in their early releases, referred to as the “First Love Trilogy,” explores themes of first love and heartbreak. The trilogy begins with Who!, which serves as an exposition, continues with Why.., which details the story’s conclusion, and concludes with their second EP, How?, released in April 2024. How? became the group’s first album to top the Circle Album Chart, reflecting their growing popularity. The title track, “Earth, Wind & Fire,” earned BOYNEXTDOOR their first music show win on The Show on April 23, 2024, further cementing their rising status in the industry.

BOYNEXTDOOR’s appeal transcends South Korea, with their debut in Japan on July 10, 2024, through the maxi single “And,.” This release included Japanese versions of their previous singles and introduced the original track “Good Day,” earning them commercial success in the Japanese market. Their participation in the K-pop exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles in 2024 further highlighted their international reach.

As they continue to develop their artistry, BOYNEXTDOOR remains committed to their original concept of creating relatable, everyday music. Their upcoming third EP, 19.99, set for release in September 2024, is highly anticipated and promises to further explore their unique musical identity, building on the foundation they have established since their debut. With their relatable image, engaging music, and growing international presence, BOYNEXTDOOR is poised to become a significant force in the global K-pop industry.
