Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) was a remarkable figure whose talents and influence touched nearly every part of early American life. Born in Boston as the 15th of 17 children, Franklin had just two years of formal schooling but was endlessly curious and self-taught. At age 17, he moved to Philadelphia, where he built a successful career as a printer and later published the famous Poor Richard’s Almanack, known for its clever proverbs and practical wisdom.

Franklin’s passion for science led to some groundbreaking discoveries. He famously proved that lightning is a form of electricity through his daring kite experiment. Among his many inventions are the lightning rod, bifocal glasses, and the Franklin stove. He also mapped the Gulf Stream and made significant contributions to understanding weather patterns.

Beyond science, Franklin was a dedicated public servant and civic leader. He helped establish key institutions including the Library Company of Philadelphia, the American Philosophical Society, and the University of Pennsylvania. He also improved the postal service and organized the city’s first fire department.

Politically, Franklin played a key role in the birth of the United States. He helped draft both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. As a diplomat in France during the Revolutionary War, he won crucial support that helped secure American independence.

In his later years, Franklin spoke out against slavery, becoming a vocal abolitionist. When he died in 1790, over 20,000 people attended his funeral—a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire through his wisdom, innovation, and commitment to public good.
