It was formed by Xgalx, a subsidiary of Avex, the group comprises seven talented members: Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Juria, Cocona, Maya, and Harvey. They made their official debut on March 18, 2022, with the release of their digital single “Tippy Toes,” marking the beginning of their journey in the global music scene.
The group’s name, XG, stands for “Xtraordinary Girls,” reflecting their aspiration to bring something unique and empowering to their audience. XG’s social media presence began on January 25, 2022, with a video titled “Xgalx – The Beginning,” showcasing several girls training for the Xgalx Project. This was followed by a dance performance video directed by Choi Hyo-jin from the Korean street dance TV show Street Woman Fighter. In the weeks leading up to their debut, XG released various teaser content, including a rap video featuring Jurin and Harvey covering Rob Stone’s “Chill Bill” and a vocal cover of Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” by Juria and Chisa.
On June 29, 2022, XG released their second all-English-language single titled “Mascara,” which was accompanied by their first television appearance on South Korea’s Mnet’s M Countdown. The group’s energetic and polished performance garnered them significant attention. Later that year, on November 17, they released a rap cypher video entitled “Galz Xypher.” This video went viral on TikTok, gaining over 15 million views and solidifying their presence in the digital space.
XG continued to build their discography and global reach with the release of their third all-English-language single, “Shooting Star,” on January 25, 2023. The release included an additional track titled “Left Right.” On March 6, XG made history by entering the Mediabase US Radio Top 40, becoming the first female Japanese artist and the first Japanese group to achieve this feat. Their success continued with the pre-release singles “Grl Gvng,” “TGIF,” and “New Dance,” all of which preceded their debut EP New DNA.
Released on September 27, 2023, New DNA marked a significant milestone in XG’s career. The EP, which includes the lead single “Puppet Show,” was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for shipments exceeding 100,000 copies. This achievement underscored the group’s growing influence and popularity in both Japan and the international music scene.
