Wham!

Wham! was an iconic English pop duo formed in 1981 in Bushey, Hertfordshire, by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The pair emerged as one of the most influential and successful pop acts of the 1980s, selling over 30 million certified records worldwide. Their vibrant sound and catchy hits were instrumental in defining the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the United States. Songs like “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “Careless Whisper,” and “Everything She Wants” all topped the US Billboard Hot 100, cementing their place in global pop culture. The festive hit “Last Christmas,” released in 1984, remains a holiday classic, with all proceeds from its sales dedicated to charity.

Wham!’s music drew inspiration from funk and soul, reflecting a youthful, carefree image that resonated with a global audience. Their debut album, Fantastic (1983), delved into themes of unemployment and teen angst, capturing the zeitgeist of the era. The duo’s second album, Make It Big (1984), was a massive commercial success, charting at number one in both the UK and the US. They struggled initially to secure a recording deal, but persistence paid off when they signed with Innervision Records in 1982. Wham!’s ascent to superstardom was marked by their switch to Epic Records following legal disputes with Innervision.
