Tom Morello

Tom Morello, born May 30, 1964, in Harlem, New York, is a trailblazing guitarist, songwriter, and outspoken activist known for pushing musical and political boundaries. Raised in Libertyville, Illinois, he combined an early love for music with a passion for social justice, later graduating from Harvard University with a degree in Social Studies—proof that brains and rebellion can go hand in hand.

Morello skyrocketed to fame as the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, the explosive rock band he co-founded in 1991. Their fusion of heavy riffs, hip-hop rhythms, and radical politics struck a chord with a generation, with Morello’s signature sound—often using effects and techniques that made his guitar sound like turntables or machines—becoming a hallmark of modern rock. After the band’s breakup, he joined Audioslave, showcasing a more melodic side while continuing to impress with his boundary-pushing style.

Never one to sit still, he also created The Nightwatchman, a solo folk project that channeled protest songs in the spirit of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Later, he teamed up with members of Public Enemy and Cypress Hill to form Prophets of Rage, amplifying his message of resistance through hard-hitting tracks.

Outside the studio, Morello co-founded Axis of Justice, a nonprofit that brings together music and activism. In 2023, Rage Against the Machine was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Morello representing the band with a powerful speech.
