Sufjan Stevens, born on July 1, 1975, in Detroit, Michigan, is a celebrated American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known for his distinctive blend of genres and deeply emotional lyrics. Raised in Petoskey, Michigan, Stevens’ music is often influenced by his Midwestern upbringing, which serves as a backdrop to much of his work.

Throughout his career, Stevens has demonstrated incredible versatility, merging elements of folk, indie rock, classical, and electronic music. He has released ten solo studio albums, each marking a different phase of his musical evolution. Among his most notable works are Michigan (2003) and Illinois (2005), which are part of his ambitious “50 States Project” — an endeavor in which he aimed to create an album for every U.S. state, though the project remains unfinished.
