Paul van Haver, known by his stage name Stromae, is a Belgian singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer renowned for his innovative blend of hip-hop and electronic music. Born on March 12, 1985, in Brussels, he was raised in the city’s Laken district by his Flemish mother, Miranda van Haver, after his Tutsi father, Pierre Rutare, was killed during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Stromae’s heritage includes distant Somali roots on his father’s side. His father’s absence profoundly influenced his life, and he has spoken candidly about the impact of growing up without him.

Stromae attended Jesuit and private schools, facing academic challenges before finding his path in music. His early influences ranged from Jacques Brel to Congolese rumba. At 18, he co-founded a rap duo, Suspicion, but pursued a solo career after his partner left.
