About Sir Mix-a-Lot

Anthony L. Ray, better known as Sir Mix-a-Lot, is a groundbreaking American rapper, songwriter, and producer born on August 12, 1963, in Seattle, Washington. Growing up in Seattle’s Central District, he started his musical career in the early 1980s, capturing attention with his 1986 demo “Square Dance Rap,” which gained airplay in the UK. His unique blend of hip-hop with regional influences set him on a path to success.

In 1988, Sir Mix-a-Lot released his debut album Swass, which included the hit single “Posse on Broadway,” inspired by the Seattle music scene, particularly Capitol Hill. However, it was his 1992 album Mack Daddy that catapulted him to stardom, especially with the release of the iconic track “Baby Got Back.” The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1993, becoming one of the most memorable anthems of the era.

Sir Mix-a-Lot’s creativity extended beyond music. In 1995, he hosted the UPN series The Watcher. In 2014, he collaborated with the Seattle Symphony to present a classical rendition of “Baby Got Back,” fusing hip-hop with orchestral arrangements. More recently, he has explored technology, teaching himself to build electronic equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, even creating RF amplifiers that he sold to recording studios.

With his distinctive style and influential contributions, Sir Mix-a-Lot remains a key figure in both the music and cultural landscapes, particularly within Seattle’s vibrant scene.
