Shilpa Rao

Shilpa Rao, born Apeksha Rao on April 11, 1984, in Jamshedpur, India, is a celebrated Indian singer known for her versatile vocal performances and contributions to various music genres. Rao completed her Post Graduation in Applied Statistics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, before embarking on a career in music. Initially, she worked as a jingle singer, which helped her establish important industry connections. Her significant break came with the song “Tose Naina” from the 2007 film Anwar, composed by Mithoon. The track, a poignant reflection of her early career, quickly became popular and marked her debut in Hindi cinema.

Rao’s career gained substantial momentum with her performances in “Woh Ajnabi” from The Train (2007) and “Khuda Jaane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). The latter earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, cementing her place in the Indian music industry. Her collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja for the film Paa (2009) further showcased her versatility, earning her a second Filmfare nomination.
