Rebecca Lucy Taylor, known professionally as Self Esteem, is a British singer-songwriter and performer celebrated for her bold and maximalist approach to pop music. Born on October 15, 1986, in Rotherham, England, Taylor first rose to prominence as one half of the indie-folk duo Slow Club. In 2017, she transitioned to a solo career under the name Self Esteem, releasing her debut single “Your Wife.”
Her solo work blends experimental pop, empowering lyrics, and reflections on identity and societal norms. Taylor’s debut solo album, Compliments Please (2019), earned critical acclaim and solidified her as a unique voice in the pop scene. In 2021, she followed up with Prioritise Pleasure, which garnered widespread praise, winning BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year and earning a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize.
In 2025, Taylor released her third album, A Complicated Woman, which expanded her sonic range with orchestral arrangements and choral backing, reflecting her growth as an artist.
