About Russ

Russell James Vitale, professionally known as Russ, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer who has made a significant impact in the music industry by charting his own course. Born on September 26, 1992, in Secaucus, New Jersey, Russ is of Sicilian descent and spent his childhood moving around due to his father’s job, living in states like North Carolina and Kentucky before settling in Atlanta, Georgia. His love for music began early—he started writing raps in a notebook at age seven and learned to play guitar from his father. By the time he was 14, he was producing his own beats, setting the stage for a career built on self-reliance and creativity.

Russ’s journey into the music world was anything but conventional. After briefly attending Kennesaw State University, he co-founded the Atlanta-based hip hop collective Diemon with his friend Bugus. Determined to make a name for himself, Russ released 11 self-produced albums between 2011 and 2014, distributing them for free online. Despite his prolific output, widespread recognition eluded him until he joined SoundCloud in 2014. Over the next three years, Russ released a new song every week, building a loyal fanbase. Two of these songs, “What They Want” and “Losin Control,” eventually became his first Billboard Hot 100 entries, peaking at 83 and 62, respectively.

In 2017, Russ achieved mainstream success when he signed a deal with Columbia Records and released his twelfth studio album, There’s Really a Wolf. The album, which he entirely self-produced, was both a commercial and critical success, debuting at number seven on the US Billboard 200 and achieving platinum status. There’s Really a Wolf featured the hits “What They Want” and “Losin Control,” solidifying Russ’s position as a rising star in the industry.

Following the success of his debut, Russ released his thirteenth studio album, Zoo, in 2018, which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. His momentum continued with his fourteenth album, Shake the Snow Globe (2020), which also debuted at number four and included the hit single “Best on Earth,” a collaboration with rapper Bia that became his highest-charting song to date. In addition to his music career, Russ published a self-help book titled It’s All in Your Head in 2019, in which he detailed his path to success and the mindset that helped him achieve his goals.

In 2020, Russ made a bold move by leaving Columbia Records and going independent once again. He followed this up by releasing the critically acclaimed EP Chomp, which featured collaborations with respected hip-hop figures like Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, and Benny the Butcher. In 2021, he dropped the sequel Chomp 2, continuing to build his reputation as a versatile and hard-hitting artist.

Russ’s music blends hip hop and R&B elements, with his distinctive style combining rapping and singing. He prides himself on being a self-made artist, producing, mixing, mastering, and writing all his own music. His early influences, including G-Unit, 50 Cent, and Eminem, shaped his raspy, confident rap flow and melodic hooks.

Despite facing controversies, such as his outspoken criticism of drug culture in the industry, Russ has maintained a dedicated fanbase and continues to inspire others with his message of independence and perseverance. Now an independent artist with full creative control, Russ’s story exemplifies how talent, grit, and consistency can lead to success in the music industry on one’s own terms.
