About roots
The Roots are a legendary American hip-hop band best known for blending sharp lyricism with live instrumentation—something that’s made them stand out for decades. Formed in 1987 by high school friends Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson in Philadelphia, the group started out performing on street corners under the name Square Roots before evolving into the powerhouse they are today.
Early on, they brought in key members like rapper Malik B. and bassist Leonard “Hub” Hubbard, helping shape their signature style: a mix of hip-hop, soul, and jazz all performed live, which was pretty rare for rap acts at the time. Their debut album Organix dropped in 1993, earning underground respect and paving the way for major-label releases like Do You Want More?!!!??! and Illadelph Halflife. But it was Things Fall Apart in 1999 that really made waves—earning them a Grammy for the single “You Got Me” and critical acclaim across the board.
Beyond their music catalog, The Roots have become cultural staples. Since 2009, they’ve been the house band for Jimmy Fallon, first on Late Night and now on The Tonight Show, introducing their sound to millions of viewers nightly. Despite the TV gig, they’ve never slowed down with albums, tours, or their annual Roots Picnic festival in Philly, which brings together diverse acts and fans from all over.
With over three decades in the game, The Roots continue to redefine what a hip-hop band can be—thoughtful, genre-bending, and always live.
