About Ronald Isley

Ronald Isley is an iconic American singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known as the soulful voice behind The Isley Brothers—a group that helped shape the sound of R&B, soul, and funk across generations. Born on May 21, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ronald’s musical roots trace back to his childhood singing gospel in church. By the age of seven, he was already performing on stage, foreshadowing a lifelong career in music.

In 1957, Ronald and his brothers O’Kelly and Rudolph moved to New York City, determined to break into the industry. Just two years later, their energetic anthem “Shout” catapulted them into the spotlight, becoming a cultural touchstone and marking the start of a legendary run. As lead vocalist, Ronald’s unmistakable voice became the heart of The Isley Brothers’ evolving sound—from doo-wop beginnings to funk-driven classics in the ’70s and smooth R&B in the ’90s.

The 1973 release of 3 + 3 was a turning point, blending older and younger generations of Isleys and producing enduring hits like “That Lady.” Ronald’s suave persona, later dubbed “Mr. Biggs,” added a new dimension to the group’s legacy, leading to high-profile collaborations with artists like R. Kelly and 2Pac. In addition to group work, his solo efforts—Here I Am: Bacharach Meets Isley (2003) and Mr. I (2010)—showcased his timeless appeal.

In 1992, Ronald Isley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his decades of influence and innovation in American music.
