Rise of the Northstar (ROTN) is a French metal band formed in Paris in 2008 by vocalist Victor “Vithia” Leroy. Their name and early works, like the debut EP Tokyo Assault (2010), are heavily influenced by Japanese manga, particularly Fist of the North Star. ROTN’s sound blends elements of heavy metal, hardcore punk, and hip-hop, creating a unique musical style that resonates with fans of multiple genres.
ROTN’s music is heavily influenced by the raw energy of 90s New York hardcore, groove metal legends like Machine Head and Pantera, and the aggressive, gritty spirit of hip-hop acts such as Wu-Tang Clan and Onyx. Lyrically, the band often draws from manga themes, delving into concepts of rebellion and personal codes of honor. Their image, which features members wearing Japanese school uniforms, channels the “furyo” (delinquent) style, symbolizing unity and defiance against societal norms.
The band has undergone several lineup changes over the years, but the current members are Vithia (vocals), Eva-B (lead guitar), Air One (rhythm guitar), Yoru (bass), and Phantom (drums). ROTN’s discography includes full-length albums Welcame (2014), The Legacy of Shi (2018), and Showdown (2023). After a hiatus in 2022 due to internal issues, the band returned in 2023 with a refreshed lineup and the release of Showdown, reaffirming their place in the global metal scene.
With their distinctive fusion of genres and cultural influences, Rise of the Northstar continues to captivate audiences and maintain a strong presence in the world of heavy music.
