About Rich Homie Quan

Rich Homie Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar on October 4, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a prominent American rapper who rose to fame in the early 2010s. Growing up in Atlanta, Quan initially dreamed of a career in professional baseball. He played the sport throughout high school, excelling as a center fielder and leadoff hitter at Ronald McNair Sr. High School. His talent on the field earned him a scholarship offer from Fort Valley State University. However, financial challenges led Quan to drop out after just two weeks, forcing him to seek employment. After losing his job at a nearby airport, Quan found himself involved in illegal activities, which eventually led to a 15-month stint in jail.

Quan’s time in jail became a turning point in his life. During this period, he began to take music seriously, transitioning from a casual hobby to a potential career. Influenced by the dirty south sounds of artists like Jeezy, Gucci Mane, T.I., and Lil Wayne, Quan channeled his experiences and emotions into his music. Upon his release, he quickly made a mark on the Atlanta music scene, gaining recognition for his storytelling ability and heartfelt lyrics.

In 2012, Quan released his first mixtape, I Go In On Every Song, which helped him build a local following. His breakthrough came in 2013 with the release of his single “Type of Way,” a song that resonated deeply with listeners and peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. The success of “Type of Way” solidified Quan’s place in the rap industry, leading to collaborations with major artists like Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane. His mixtape Still Goin’ In (Reloaded) was named one of the best mixtapes of 2013 by Rolling Stone, further cementing his rising star status.

Quan’s career continued to ascend with the release of “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015, which became another major hit, reaching number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. His energetic performance in the music video made the song’s dance move popular on platforms like Vine, expanding his influence beyond the music charts. That same year, he collaborated with Young Thug and Birdman as part of the Cash Money Records spin-off project, Rich Gang, achieving success with the single “Lifestyle.”

Despite his success, Quan’s journey was not without challenges. In 2016, he became embroiled in a legal battle with his former label, Think It’s A Game, over unpaid royalties. The dispute was eventually settled out of court, allowing Quan to focus on his music. He released his debut studio album, Rich as in Spirit, in 2018, which showcased his growth as an artist and his commitment to his craft.

In 2022, Quan made a strong return with the EP Family & Mula, marking his first project in over three years. The EP featured the single “Krazy” and demonstrated Quan’s resilience and determination to remain relevant in the ever-evolving rap industry.

Throughout his career, Rich Homie Quan has been admired for his honest lyrics and ability to connect with his audience. His music reflects the struggles and triumphs of his life, making him a relatable and influential figure in the hip-hop community. Despite his obstacles, Quan continues to push forward, driven by his passion for music and his desire to leave a lasting legacy in the industry.
