About Hoodie Allen

Hoodie Allen, born Steven Adam Markowitz on August 19, 1988, in Plainview, New York, is a prominent American rapper and songwriter known for his independent approach to the music industry. Raised in a Jewish household on Long Island, Allen developed a passion for music at a young age, writing lyrics and performing at house parties during his school years. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he balanced academics, sports, and music, graduating in 2010 with a degree in marketing and finance. While at Penn, he joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and played as a defensive back for the university’s sprint football team.

After graduation, Allen secured a job at Google, working as an AdWords associate, but his dream was always to pursue music. Despite the security of a corporate career, he juggled his day job with his burgeoning music career, spending long nights writing songs, responding to fan emails, and booking shows. In 2011, with rising interest in his music and live performances, Allen made the bold decision to leave Google and fully commit to his career in hip hop.

Allen’s debut mixtape, Pep Rally, released in 2010, marked his entry into the music scene, blending pop and hip hop influences. His breakthrough came with the 2012 release of his debut extended play (EP), All American, which debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200. The EP, featuring the popular singles “No Interruption” and “No Faith in Brooklyn,” showcased his fresh approach to hip hop and solidified his fan base. Unlike many of his peers, Allen remained independent throughout his career, choosing not to sign with a major record label. This independence allowed him greater creative freedom, which he has consistently prioritized over commercial success.

In 2014, Allen released his first studio album, People Keep Talking, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. The album featured the single “All About It,” a collaboration with Ed Sheeran, which became Allen’s only entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the success of People Keep Talking, he embarked on world tours, growing his fanbase in the U.S. and internationally. His next album, Happy Camper (2016), debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200, further establishing his presence in the music industry.

Allen continued to evolve musically with his third studio album, The Hype (2017), and his fourth album, Whatever USA (2019). These projects saw him experimenting with new sounds while maintaining his signature upbeat and relatable lyrical content, often categorized as “frat rap” due to its focus on coming-of-age themes and youthful hedonism.

After a brief hiatus from music, Allen returned in 2022 with the single “Wouldn’t That Be Nice,” which led to the release of his fifth studio album, bub, in 2023. Throughout his career, Hoodie Allen has built a loyal fanbase by staying true to his independent roots, engaging directly with his listeners, and delivering music that blends catchy pop hooks with hip hop rhythms. His unique blend of humor, relatability, and entrepreneurial spirit has cemented his place in the indie hip hop scene.
