About Popcaan

Andrae Hugh Sutherland, professionally known as Popcaan, was born on July 19, 1988, in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica. Growing up in Portmore in a housing scheme known as Gangsta City, Popcaan experienced a rough childhood marked by the street drama that eventually led him to leave school. The stage name “Popcaan” was given to him by his close friend Scumpy, who sadly lost his life to street violence in Portmore. Popcaan’s early life challenges would later shape his music and his persona as an artist.

In 2007, Popcaan’s career began to take shape when he approached Vybz Kartel at a local jam called “My Scheme.” Impressed by his talent, Kartel recruited Popcaan into his Portmore Empire music group, known as the Gaza Music Empire. Kartel became both a mentor and producer for Popcaan, introducing him to the music industry and taking him to major shows like Sting and Reggae Sumfest. Popcaan started making music for Adidjaheim Productions with in-house producer NotNice, who was the first to voice him professionally. Early hits such as “Gal Wine,” “It Nuh Work So,” and “Gangsta City” began to establish Popcaan’s presence in the dancehall scene.

Popcaan’s breakthrough came in 2010 with the release of “Clarks,” a collaboration with Vybz Kartel that paid homage to the British shoe brand. The song’s success was significant, leading to a nationwide spike in Clarks shoe sales and winning multiple awards, including the Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Award for Best New Artist. In 2012, “Only Man She Want” marked Popcaan’s first entry on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, reaching number 89. His rising popularity was further solidified with performances and tours across Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean.

In 2013, Popcaan’s career took a pivotal turn when he signed with Mixpak Records. His debut studio album, “Where We Come From,” released in 2014, showcased his unique blend of traditional dancehall and electronic music. The album’s first single, “Everything Nice,” was well-received, entering the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart at number 2. The success of the album, coupled with a cover feature on The Fader, established Popcaan as a global dancehall star. His collaborations with international artists such as Pusha T, Jamie xx, and Kanye West further elevated his profile.

Popcaan’s second album, “Forever,” released in 2018, continued his upward trajectory. The album included singles like “Body So Good” and “Firm and Strong,” and it debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. His signing with Drake’s OVO Sound and Warner Records in 2016 opened new avenues for collaboration and growth. Popcaan’s third album, “Vanquish,” released in 2019 under OVO Sound, and his fourth album, “Fixtape,” released in 2020, featured high-profile collaborations with artists like Drake and PartyNextDoor.

In 2023, Popcaan released his fourth album, “Great Is He,” which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Throughout his career, Popcaan has maintained a balance between traditional dancehall sounds and modern electronic influences, cementing his place as a leading figure in contemporary reggae and dancehall music. His acting debut in “The Intent 2: The Come Up” in 2018 further demonstrated his versatility as an artist. Despite the challenges of his early life, Popcaan’s resilience and talent have propelled him to international fame, making him a prominent ambassador of Jamaican music on the global stage.
