About Only The Family

Only The Family (OTF) is a prominent American hip-hop collective hailing from Chicago, Illinois, founded in 2010 by acclaimed rapper Lil Durk. Emerging from the city’s drill music scene, OTF quickly gained recognition for its raw, street-oriented sound that reflects the harsh realities of urban life. The group’s formation coincided with the rise of drill music, a subgenre of hip-hop that originated in Chicago and is known for its aggressive beats and gritty lyrics. As one of the key pioneers of the genre, OTF played a major role in bringing drill music to the forefront of mainstream hip-hop.

OTF is composed of a number of drill artists, many of whom, like Lil Durk, share deep roots in Chicago’s South Side. Among its most notable members was the late rapper King Von, whose storytelling and lyrical prowess helped to solidify OTF’s influence in the rap scene. King Von’s tragic death in 2020 was a significant loss to the group, but OTF has continued to build on the momentum that its members, past and present, have generated over the years.

Initially, OTF was affiliated with French Montana’s Coke Boys imprint, which led to the collective adopting the nickname “OTF Coke Boys.” This partnership saw OTF artists feature on Coke Boys projects, giving the group a wider audience. Despite the affiliation, OTF eventually branched out to establish itself as an independent entity, furthering its presence in the music industry. Lil Durk, as the leader of the collective, took on a larger role as both an artist and businessman, steering OTF into collaborations with various labels and artists, while also expanding the group’s reach beyond the confines of drill music.

In 2018, Lil Durk signed with Alamo Records after parting ways with Def Jam Recordings, marking a turning point in his career and the growth of OTF. His contract with Alamo Records, which is distributed by Interscope Records, allowed him to maintain creative control while gaining access to major distribution networks. Alamo Records was later acquired by Sony Music in 2021, further boosting Lil Durk’s platform and OTF’s visibility.

OTF’s music is heavily influenced by the experiences and challenges faced by its members growing up in Chicago’s impoverished neighborhoods. Their lyrics often revolve around violence, survival, loyalty, and street life, resonating with fans who relate to these themes. Despite its controversial subject matter, the collective has garnered a loyal fan base, particularly among listeners who appreciate the authenticity and raw emotion that OTF brings to its music.

As a collective, OTF has seen both triumphs and tragedies, but it has remained a significant force in the hip-hop world. Lil Durk, as its founder and leader, has successfully transitioned from being a street rapper to one of the genre’s most influential artists, with chart-topping albums and collaborations with high-profile artists. The collective’s impact on Chicago’s drill scene and the wider hip-hop community is undeniable, and their continued success serves as a testament to the resilience and talent of its members.

Today, OTF operates independently, with its releases distributed through Empire Distribution, while Lil Durk continues his solo career under Sony Music. The collective’s journey from Chicago’s streets to international recognition underscores the power of perseverance and unity within the music industry.
