Malcolm Todd

Malcolm Todd (November 27, 1939 – June 6, 2013) was a distinguished English archaeologist, celebrated for his in-depth studies of Roman Britain and the Germanic tribes during the Migration Period. Born in Durham, England, Todd’s passion for archaeology led him to study at St David’s College, Lampeter, and later at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he honed his expertise in the classics.

Throughout his esteemed career, Todd held prominent academic positions at the University of Nottingham and the University of Exeter. From 1979 to 1996, he served as a professor of archaeology at Exeter, influencing generations of scholars. His fieldwork took him to various important excavation sites, including Ancaster, Margidunum, and Newark-on-Trent, where he made significant contributions to understanding Roman urban life and its interactions with neighboring cultures.

Todd was not only dedicated to teaching but also played a vital role in the academic community. He served as the editor of Britannia and was vice-president of the Roman Society, cementing his influence within the discipline. After retiring in 2000, Todd turned his focus to writing, producing influential works such as Roman Britain and The Early Germans, which remain essential reading in the field.
