Madhubanti Bagchi is an acclaimed Indian singer and composer known for her versatility across various musical genres, including Indian classical, pop, and playback singing. A disciple of the prestigious Agra Gharana, she has carved a niche in both Bollywood and regional music industries with her soulful voice and profound musical training. Madhubanti’s dedication to her craft and her ability to seamlessly blend traditional and contemporary styles make her a standout figure in the world of music.

Born in Balurghat, West Bengal, Madhubanti’s early life was deeply rooted in academics and music. Her father, Subrata Bagchi, a professor, and her mother, Srabani Bagchi, a businesswoman, ensured that she received a well-rounded upbringing. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering from the Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata, and later pursued a master’s degree in Laser and Optical Engineering from Jadavpur University. Despite her strong academic foundation, her heart always belonged to music—a passion nurtured by her father, who introduced her to the art form during her formative years.

Madhubanti began her formal training in Indian classical music at a young age under the tutelage of Shrimati Subhra Guha, an exponent of the Agra Gharana. Her rigorous training continued with lessons from the renowned thumri singer Vidushi Purnima Chowdhury. This classical foundation became the cornerstone of her illustrious career, shaping her vocal style and artistic sensibilities. Her involvement with the Bengali band Mrittika further diversified her musical repertoire, allowing her to experiment with various sounds and styles.

Her foray into playback singing marked the beginning of a remarkable journey in Indian cinema. Madhubanti has lent her voice to numerous Bollywood films, collaborating with leading composers such as Pritam, Amit Trivedi, Sachin-Jigar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Shantanu Moitra. Her contributions to films like Love Aaj Kal (2020), Laxmii (2020), Hum Do Hamare Do (2021), Good Luck Jerry (2022), Doctor G (2022), and Uunchai (2022) have been widely appreciated. Most recently, her voice adorned the much-anticipated Heeramandi (2024). Notably, her song “Aaj Ki Raat” from Stree 2 became a viral sensation, amassing over 600 million views on YouTube.

Madhubanti’s talent shines equally in the Bengali film industry, where she has contributed memorable songs to films such as Shudhu Tomari Jonyo (2015), Ahare Mon (2018), Kuler Achaar (2022), and Boudi Canteen (2022). Her versatility extends to independent projects, and she participated in the first season of Coke Studio Bangla in 2022, further showcasing her ability to adapt to diverse musical settings.

In addition to her playback work, Madhubanti has a rich discography of standalone songs in both Hindi and Bengali. Tracks like “Tanha Tanha,” “Shayad,” “Bansuri,” and “Ek Taara” in Hindi, as well as Bengali hits such as “Na Na Shey Phirbey Na Aar,” “Lilabali,” and “Kanamachhi,” highlight her range and emotive expression.

Madhubanti Bagchi’s journey from a small town in West Bengal to becoming a celebrated name in Indian music exemplifies dedication, talent, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
