Los Ángeles Azules

Los Ángeles Azules is an iconic Mexican musical group that originated in Mexico City in 1976. Founded by the Mejía Avante siblings—Elías, Alfredo, José Hilario, Jorge, Cristina, and Guadalupe—the band initially explored a variety of musical styles before embracing the distinctive cumbia sonidera genre. This genre fuses traditional Colombian cumbia with Mexican influences, a sound that would become their signature.

The group’s breakthrough came in 1997 with their hit song “Cómo Te Voy a Olvidar”, which skyrocketed them to fame across Mexico. Over the years, they’ve collaborated with renowned artists such as Carla Morrison, Lila Downs, and Ximena Sariñana, bringing fresh twists to their classic tracks. In 2014, they revolutionized their sound by performing with the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra, thus creating a new subgenre, cumbia sinfónica—a blend of cumbia rhythms with orchestral elements that further cemented their influence in Latin music.

Los Ángeles Azules have also become digital trailblazers. They made history by becoming the first Mexican group to join YouTube’s Billion Views Club. Their collaborations with artists like Ximena Sariñana (“Mis Sentimientos”) and Natalia Lafourcade (“Nunca Es Suficiente”) have racked up billions of views, showcasing their broad appeal.

In 2018, they made a major cultural mark by becoming the first traditional cumbia group to perform at Coachella, introducing their vibrant, infectious rhythms to an international audience. With their 2022 album, Cumbia del Corazón, featuring artists like Juanes and David Bisbal, they continue to showcase their evolution while staying true to their roots. Today, Los Ángeles Azules remain a global force, spreading the joyful energy of Mexican cumbia to fans worldwide.
