About LL COOL J
LL Cool J, born James Todd Smith on January 14, 1968, in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York, is a pioneering rapper and actor whose influence on hip-hop and popular culture has spanned decades. Raised in a tumultuous environment, LL Cool J’s early life was marred by violence. When he was just four years old, his father shot both his mother and grandfather, an incident that deeply impacted his childhood. After they recovered, his mother began a relationship with a man who physically and verbally abused young LL Cool J for years. Despite these early hardships, LL found solace in music, particularly in the emerging hip-hop scene of Queens, New York, where he was raised.
LL Cool J’s passion for rapping began at the age of 10, heavily influenced by early hip-hop groups like The Treacherous Three. His grandfather, a jazz musician, played a crucial role in supporting his musical aspirations, buying him turntables, a mixer, and an amplifier. His mother also supported him by purchasing a drum machine with her tax refund. By 16, LL Cool J was creating his own demo tapes and submitting them to record labels, including the newly founded Def Jam Recordings. His demo caught the attention of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, leading to LL Cool J’s signing with Def Jam and the release of his debut single, “I Need a Beat,” in 1984.
His debut album, Radio (1985), became a landmark in the new school hip-hop movement, blending rap with rock elements and delivering aggressive, self-assured lyrics. The album’s success, along with its standout track “I Can’t Live Without My Radio,” helped cement LL Cool J as one of the genre’s first commercially successful rappers. He followed up with a string of critically acclaimed albums, including Bigger and Deffer (1987), which featured the hit ballad “I Need Love,” and Mama Said Knock You Out (1990), which became one of his most iconic releases.
In addition to his music career, LL Cool J became a prominent actor. He made his film debut in Krush Groove (1985), a movie centered around the rise of Def Jam and the hip-hop scene. Over the years, he appeared in several notable films, including Deep Blue Sea (1999), Any Given Sunday (1999), and S.W.A.T. (2003). On television, he starred as NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna on the long-running CBS series NCIS: Los Angeles. He also became the host of the popular show Lip Sync Battle, further expanding his reach in mainstream entertainment.

In 2017, he became the first rapper to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors, recognizing his cultural impact. In 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an award for Musical Excellence. His fourteenth studio album, The FORCE (2024), marks his return to music after a long hiatus, solidifying his status as a hip-hop icon.
