He grew up in a creative household, with his mother Maggie Baird, an actress and screenwriter, and his father Patrick O’Connell, an actor and musician. From an early age, Finneas demonstrated a passion for music, taking a songwriting class with his mother at the age of 12. His early exposure to the entertainment industry and his musical family background set the stage for his prolific career as both a solo artist and a producer.
Finneas first gained widespread recognition for his work with his younger sister, Billie Eilish, with whom he has co-written and produced several critically acclaimed projects. Together, the siblings have made history in the music industry, with Finneas earning numerous accolades, including ten Grammy Awards. Notably, he became the youngest person ever to win the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. His production for Eilish’s debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, led to Grammy wins for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year for “Bad Guy,” and Best Pop Vocal Album, among others.
Beyond his work with Eilish, Finneas has collaborated with a range of high-profile artists, such as Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, and Halsey, showcasing his versatility as a songwriter and producer. He produced Gomez’s 2019 hit single “Lose You to Love Me,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and contributed to Camila Cabello’s album Romance. Finneas’s talent for writing and producing has been recognized for its emotional depth and ability to craft songs that resonate on a personal level.
As a solo artist, Finneas has released several singles and two studio albums. His debut EP, Blood Harmony (2019), featured his most successful track, “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night,” which peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. His debut studio album, Optimist, was released in 2021, further establishing him as a standalone musical talent. In 2024, Finneas announced his second studio album, For Cryin’ Out Loud!, with its title track released as the lead single.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Finneas has ventured into acting. He made his film debut in the 2013 independent feature Life Inside Out, a project co-written by his mother. He also appeared in the TV series Glee as Alistair and had guest roles on Modern Family and Aquarius. His early acting experience helped him develop a unique perspective in songwriting, particularly in writing from the point of view of other artists, a skill he has often employed in his work with Billie Eilish.
Finneas’s creative journey is marked by his ability to seamlessly balance his solo career with his collaborations. His deep connection with music and his keen sense of storytelling have cemented his place as one of the most influential musicians and producers of his generation.
