Melissa Viviane Jefferson, better known as Lizzo, was born on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. She moved with her family to Houston, Texas, at the age of ten, where she began studying classical flute. Lizzo furthered her music education at the University of Houston, majoring in classical music. However, after her father’s passing, she faced financial struggles and even lived out of her car while chasing her musical dreams.

In 2011, Lizzo relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she immersed herself in the local hip-hop scene. Her debut album, Lizzobangers, dropped in 2013, followed by Big Grrrl Small World in 2015. Lizzo’s 2016 EP, Coconut Oil, solidified her distinctive mix of rap, R&B, and pop. Her breakthrough moment came in 2019 with the release of Cuz I Love You, which peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200. The album featured the smash hit “Truth Hurts,” which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and made Lizzo the longest-leading solo female rapper on the chart.

Known for her advocacy of body positivity and self-love, Lizzo has earned numerous accolades, including Grammy Awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Pop Solo Performance.

In 2023, Lizzo faced serious legal challenges when former dancers accused her of harassment and fostering a hostile work environment. This led to canceled performances and lost sponsorships. Lizzo took a break to focus on her health and music but has since announced a new album, aiming to reconnect with fans and move beyond the controversies.
