Khruangbin is a genre-defying trio from Houston, Texas, known for blending a rich mix of global influences into their distinctive sound. Formed in 2010, the band is made up of bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr. Their name, Khruangbin, which means “airplane” in Thai, reflects their far-reaching, cross-cultural approach to music.

The group’s roots stretch back to the early 2000s when Speer and Johnson played together in a church gospel band. Their shared love of diverse musical styles pushed them to explore genres beyond traditional gospel, and in 2007, they met Lee. The trio’s synergy led them to create a sound that mixes Thai rock, Iranian pop, dub, funk, and more.

Their debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), drew inspiration from 1960s Thai music, introducing the world to their smooth, instrumental compositions. Their second album, Con Todo el Mundo (2018), expanded their sound to include Middle Eastern influences, while their 2020 release, Mordechai, took an even more experimental turn, blending various genres into a new, unique groove.

In 2022, Khruangbin teamed up with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré for Ali, a tribute to the legendary Ali Farka Touré. This collaboration solidified their reputation for pushing musical boundaries.

Their 2024 album, A La Sala, offers a more intimate vibe, with influences from Iranian rock, Jamaican dub, and Thai funk. The title, meaning “to the room” in Spanish, captures the album’s cozy, familial feel. As the band continues to tour and perform globally, their innovative fusion of musical traditions has earned them widespread acclaim.

In November 2024, Khruangbin’s influence was further recognized with a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, marking a significant milestone in their already impressive career.
