Jarad Anthony Higgins, known professionally as Juice WRLD, was an influential American rapper, singer, and songwriter born on December 2, 1998, in Calumet Park, Illinois. Despite his career spanning only four years, Juice WRLD left an indelible mark on the music industry, particularly within the emo rap and SoundCloud rap genres that gained mainstream prominence during the late 2010s. His stage name, a nod to the 1992 crime thriller film Juice, symbolized his ambition to “take over the world.”

Higgins began his music journey as an independent artist in 2015, initially performing under the name JuicetheKidd. By 2017, he had signed a recording contract with Grade A Productions and Interscope Records. His breakthrough came with the release of his single “Lucid Dreams,” which achieved diamond certification and soared to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. This success was followed by his debut album Goodbye & Good Riddance in May 2018. The album, which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200, featured other notable singles like “All Girls Are the Same,” “Lean Wit Me,” “Wasted,” and “Armed and Dangerous,” all of which charted on the Hot 100.

Juice WRLD’s music was characterized by its melancholic and emotionally charged lyrics, often reflecting themes of heartache, vulnerability, and the struggles associated with substance abuse. His genre-blending style, combining elements of emo, punk, rock, and rap, resonated with a broad audience, earning him a place as a leading figure in emo rap. His influences were diverse, including rappers like Travis Scott, Chief Keef, and Kanye West, as well as rock and punk artists like Billy Idol and Blink-182.

In 2018, he also collaborated with Future on the mixtape Wrld on Drugs. The following year, Juice WRLD released his second studio album, Death Race for Love, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the hit single “Robbery.” Despite his rising success, Higgins’ life was marred by struggles with substance abuse. He began using drugs in his early teens and had been candid about his battles with addiction.

Tragically, Juice WRLD’s life was cut short when he died of a drug overdose on December 8, 2019, just six days after his 21st birthday. His posthumous releases further cemented his legacy. Legends Never Die (2020) set records for the most successful posthumous debut and for most U.S. top-ten entries from one album. The single “Come & Go,” a collaboration with Marshmello, reached number two on the Hot 100. His second posthumous album, Fighting Demons (2021), included the single “Already Dead” and was accompanied by the documentary film Juice WRLD: Into the Abyss.

Juice WRLD’s artistry was defined by his ability to blend emotional vulnerability with infectious melodies, making him a significant figure in modern music. His influence extended beyond his brief career, with a legacy that continues to impact and inspire a new generation of listeners and artists.
