About JPL
JPL whose real name is Jon Peter Lewis, born on November 7, 1979, is an American singer and songwriter who first gained prominence as a finalist on the third season of American Idol. Lewis captured attention with his dynamic vocal range and engaging stage presence. His journey through the music industry reflects a blend of talent, resilience, and creativity, marked by significant achievements both before and after his time on reality television.
Raised in various cities across the United States, Lewis eventually settled in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he graduated from Central High School in 1998. His early interest in the performing arts was evident during his high school years; he took on the lead role of Thorin Oakenshield in a local children’s theater production of The Hobbit in 1997. Throughout his high school and college years, Lewis participated in numerous theatrical productions and played in various rock bands, showcasing his diverse musical abilities. His initial ambition was to pursue a career in medicine, which led him to Brigham Young University–Idaho. However, his passion for music ultimately prevailed, steering him toward a career in entertainment.
Lewis’s musical career took a significant turn when he auditioned for American Idol at the age of 23. Using college loans to fund his audition, he impressed the judges with his rendition of “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison. Praised by Simon Cowell and receiving accolades from other industry figures, including Elton John, Lewis quickly became a fan favorite. His vibrant performances, including his rendition of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” helped him advance to the finals. Although he was voted off in eighth place after a memorable performance of “Jailhouse Rock,” Lewis’s time on the show solidified his status as a rising star in the music industry.
Post-American Idol, Lewis chose to focus on developing his own musical style rather than rushing to release a pop album. From late 2004 to 2006, he worked on composing original music, collaborating with producer Alex Gibson and other notable figures in Hollywood. His commitment to creating authentic music was evident in his early works, including “Turn to Grey,” a song he recorded as a tribute to Jennifer Hudson. Lewis’s dedication to his craft led to the release of his debut album, Stories from Hollywood, on his 27th birthday, November 7, 2006. This album, characterized by its blend of rock and acoustic tracks, marked him as the first Idol finalist to independently release an album of original music.
Lewis continued to build his musical career with the release of his second album, Break the Silence, on July 22, 2008. Produced by Chris Garcia and featuring collaborations with musicians such as Nick Lashley and Kenny Aronoff, the album received critical acclaim and was recognized as one of the best pop/rock albums of the year by Billboard and People magazine. His dedication to his craft also included a self-titled EP in February 2010 and a foray into digital media with the internet show American Nobody, which offered a humorous look at the music industry.
In 2013, Lewis teamed up with Ryan Hayes to form the duo Midas Whale. Their audition for the fourth season of The Voice was met with enthusiasm from all four judges, and they chose to join Adam Levine’s team. Although they were eliminated in the knockout rounds, their collaboration continued with the release of their debut album, Sugar House, on February 11, 2014. The album, funded through Kickstarter, was well-received and demonstrated the duo’s unique musical style.
Jon Peter Lewis’s career is a testament to his versatility and commitment to his craft. From his early days on American Idol to his ventures with Midas Whale, Lewis has consistently pursued his passion for music, blending his rich vocal talent with a deep respect for his artistic roots. His journey reflects a dedication to creating meaningful music and a willingness to explore new creative avenues.
