About J. Cole

Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known professionally as J. Cole, is a highly influential American rapper and record producer. Born on January 28, 1985, in Frankfurt, Germany, on a U.S. military base, Cole was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, after his family relocated when he was an infant. He gained early attention with his debut mixtape The Come Up in 2007, and after signing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2009, he released two more critically acclaimed mixtapes: The Warm Up (2009) and Friday Night Lights (2010). These projects helped Cole build a strong following, leading to a record deal and the release of his debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011), which topped the U.S. Billboard 200.

Cole’s subsequent albums, Born Sinner (2013) and 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014), further established him as a conscious and introspective rapper, with the latter earning him Grammy nominations and widespread recognition. Notable singles from these albums, such as “Power Trip” and “Crooked Smile,” showcased his ability to blend mainstream appeal with thoughtful commentary.

His later projects, including 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), KOD (2018), and The Off-Season (2021), explored deep themes such as addiction, mental health, racial inequality, and materialism. His 2018 album KOD broke records with six simultaneous top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. He has also earned two Grammy Awards, including Best Melodic Rap Performance for his feature on Lil Durk’s All My Life.

In addition to his music career, Cole is a producer who has contributed to projects by artists like Kendrick Lamar and Young Thug. He runs Dreamville Records, which has signed notable artists like JID, Ari Lennox, and EarthGang, and released the chart-topping Revenge of the Dreamers III in 2019.

Cole is also known for his philanthropic efforts, including providing housing for single mothers in his hometown. His basketball career has also garnered attention, having played professionally in Rwanda for the Patriots Basketball Club and in Canada for the Scarborough Shooting Stars.
