Hanumankind, whose real name is Sooraj Cherukat, is a dynamic and influential figure in the Indian hip-hop scene. Born in 1992 in Malappuram, Kerala, Sooraj’s journey to becoming a prominent rapper is marked by a blend of diverse cultural experiences and a deep passion for music. His early life was shaped by his time in Houston, Texas, where he spent much of his childhood. This exposure to Southern hip-hop and a variety of musical influences from the American South laid the foundation for his unique style, which later became a hallmark of his music career.

After spending his formative years in Texas, Sooraj returned to India in 2012 to pursue a degree in Business Administration at PSG College in Coimbatore. His academic path included an internship at Goldman Sachs, followed by a stint as an Operations Analyst at the company. However, despite the promising career in finance that lay ahead, Sooraj’s true passion lay in music. His decision to leave the corporate world and venture into the world of hip-hop was driven by his unwavering commitment to his craft and a desire to create something meaningful.

In 2019, Hanumankind made his debut in the Indian music scene with the release of his first single, “Daily Dose,” from his EP Kalari. The EP, which showcased his lyrical prowess and intricate wordplay, quickly garnered attention and established him as a force to be reckoned with in Indian hip-hop. His stage name, a clever play on the Hindu deity Hanuman and the term “humankind,” reflects his creative approach to blending cultural elements with contemporary music.

Hanumankind’s rise to fame was further accelerated by his performance at the NH7 Weekender in 2019, one of India’s premier music festivals. His energetic performances and powerful lyrics resonated with audiences, solidifying his place in the burgeoning Indian hip-hop community. His song “The Last Dance” was featured on the official soundtrack for the Malayalam-language film Aavesham, further expanding his reach and influence.

The release of “Big Dawgs” in July 2024 marked a significant turning point in Hanumankind’s career. The song, a collaboration with Hyderabad-based producer Kalmi, gained widespread recognition both in India and internationally. The accompanying music video, directed by Bijoy Shetty, featured a captivating performance within a classic carnival attraction known as the well of death. This unique concept, coupled with Hanumankind’s high-octane energy, made “Big Dawgs” a viral sensation, further establishing him as a rising star in the global music scene.

Hanumankind’s artistry is deeply rooted in the influences he absorbed during his time in Texas. Artists like Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat, UGK, and DJ Screw played a significant role in shaping his musical style. He also draws inspiration from contemporary hip-hop legends like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Logic, whose impact is evident in his thought-provoking lyrics and innovative sound.

Hanumankind’s impact on the Indian hip-hop scene extends beyond his music. He has become a role model for aspiring rappers, particularly in Kerala, where he has inspired a new wave of Malayalam hip-hop artists.
