About Gibbs
Freddie Gibbs, born Fredrick Jamel Tipton on June 14, 1982, in Gary, Indiana, is a rapper known for his raw storytelling and unfiltered lyricism. Growing up on the east side of Gary, he faced financial struggles and found himself caught up in street life. He briefly attended Ball State University on an athletic scholarship before enlisting in the U.S. Army, but his time in the military was cut short after a dishonorable discharge.
Gibbs’ passion for music ignited when he met local producer Finger Roll while working at a mall. This led him to join the No Tamin Entertainment crew and, in 2006, sign a deal with Interscope Records. However, label restructuring caused his debut album to be shelved, and he was dropped from the roster.
Rather than let setbacks define him, Gibbs carved out his own path. He built a loyal fan base through a series of mixtapes, showcasing his razor-sharp flow and hard-hitting delivery. In 2011, he joined Young Jeezy’s CTE World label and released Baby Face Killa in 2012. After parting ways with CTE, he founded his own label, ESGN, dropping his debut studio album of the same name in 2013.
His collaborations with Madlib (Piñata in 2014 and Bandana in 2019) cemented his reputation as one of hip-hop’s most respected lyricists. In 2020, Alfredo, his joint project with The Alchemist, earned a Grammy nomination. By 2022, Gibbs made his major-label debut with Soul Sold Separately, further solidifying his influence in rap.
With his gritty authenticity and relentless work ethic, Freddie Gibbs has established himself as one of hip-hop’s most consistent and compelling voices.
