Dread Mar I

Mariano Javier Castro, born on January 31, 1978, in Quequén, Argentina, is widely recognized by his stage name Dread Mar I. He is renowned for his contributions to reggae rock, reggae en Español, ska, and pop music, Castro’s journey to musical acclaim is as compelling as his discography. Growing up, Castro left school in the seventh grade and relocated to Maipú, Buenos Aires, where he worked in his father’s bakery. This period of his life was marked by hard work and familial ties, yet it was in Buenos Aires that Castro’s musical aspirations began to take shape.

In 2004, Castro recorded the song “Mi amor” with fellow musician DreadGon, and subsequently joined Messengers Reggae, contributing to their 2005 album Luz. This early exposure paved the way for his solo career. Adopting the moniker Dread Mar I, Castro released his debut album, Jah Guia, in 2005. Concurrently, he performed as a backup singer for Los Cafres, further embedding himself in the Argentine reggae scene. By 2006, Castro was collaborating with notable Argentine artist Guillermo Bonetto, resulting in the album Hermanos, which he promoted through domestic performances.

Dread Mar I’s career gained significant momentum in 2008 with the release of Amor-es, which coincided with his first international performances in Chile and Uruguay. That year, he became the most active Argentine reggae artist, performing 60 shows in less than eight months. His growing popularity was cemented with the release of Viví en do in 2010, followed by Transparente in 2012, an album that earned widespread acclaim and highlighted Castro’s unique blend of soulful vocals and poignant lyrics.

In 2015, Dread Mar I celebrated a decade in the music industry with a memorable performance at the Galileo Galilei Planetarium, which was recorded and released as 10 años (en vivo) at Estadio Luna Park. Three years later, he recorded Caminarás caminos in Jamaica, collaborating with renowned reggae artists, a testament to his dedication to the genre and his evolving artistry.

2020 marked a milestone in Dread Mar I’s career with his single “Tú sin mí” breaking records as the most-viewed Argentine song on YouTube, amassing 550 million views. By October 2020, he held the distinction of having the three most popular songs on YouTube in Argentina. His 2021 album Yo further showcased his musical evolution and solidified his status in the Latin American music scene.

Throughout his career, Dread Mar I performed with various bands, including Los Guerreros del Rey, enhancing his live performances and deepening his connection with fans. His soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics have made him a prominent figure in the Argentine reggae music scene, earning him numerous accolades and a dedicated fan base.

Despite his success, Castro has faced controversy, notably for comments made about fellow musician Gustavo Cerati shortly after Cerati’s death, sparking media discussions about the sensitivity of public statements regarding deceased figures. Outside of music, Castro’s roots in his family’s bakery business reflect his grounded nature and dedication to his origins. His music has also reached broader audiences, with tracks like “Inspiration,” the theme song for ESPN’s Gravity Zero, illustrating his ability to inspire and connect through his art.
