DJ Smokey, born on May 30, 1992, in Hamilton, Ontario, is a trailblazer in the experimental phonk music scene. Known for blending 1990s Memphis rap with lo-fi production, Smokey has crafted a distinctive sound that’s become a cornerstone of modern underground hip-hop.

His journey into music began in high school, where he became captivated by the raw energy of Southern rap. This passion led him to connect with like-minded artists in online communities, and in 2012, he released his debut mixtape, Purple Diamondz Vol. 1, which showcased his emerging style. His unique blend of dark, atmospheric beats and eerie samples quickly caught the attention of the underground scene.

Smokey’s breakthrough came with his 2013 album Evil Wayz, a project known for its creative use of horror movie samples and classic Memphis rap influences. Tracks like these helped establish him as a key figure in the cloud rap movement. He followed this success with albums like Codeine Demonz and Smoked Out Dance Party, solidifying his reputation as a producer with a distinct sound.

Beyond his solo work, DJ Smokey co-founded Nuke Radio, further pushing the boundaries of phonk music. He has collaborated with notable artists like Lofty305, Yung Lean, Tommy Kruise, and Yung Simmie, helping shape the future of the genre.
