Rafael Castillo Torres, better known as De la Ghetto, is a Puerto Rican-American singer, rapper, and songwriter celebrated for his pivotal role in the rise of reggaeton and Latin urban music. Born on September 17, 1984, in New York City, De la Ghetto was raised in Puerto Rico, which had a significant influence on his diverse musical style that blends reggaeton, hip-hop, and trap.
In 2004, he teamed up with fellow artist Arcángel to form a successful duo that released the hit single “Ven, Pégate,” featured on Naldo’s 2005 mixtape Sangre Nueva. Their partnership laid the foundation for De la Ghetto’s solo career, leading to the release of his debut album Masacre Musical in 2008. The album achieved notable success, peaking at number 46 on the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, with the single “Tú Te Imaginas” gaining traction on the Hot Latin Tracks chart.
De la Ghetto is also credited with pioneering the Latin trap movement, fusing reggaeton with trap and hip-hop elements. His 2018 album Mi Movimiento earned him a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Urban Music Album, and his hit “Caliente” received a nod for Best Urban Song.
