Courtney LaPlante

Courtney LaPlante, born February 26, 1989, in Bangor, Maine, is an American singer known for her powerful vocal range and contributions to the metalcore and progressive metal genres. She is best recognized as the lead vocalist of the Canadian heavy metal band Spiritbox.

Growing up as the oldest of six children, LaPlante moved to Victoria, British Columbia, at age 15 after her parents’ divorce. Before embarking on a professional music career, she held various jobs, including working as a barista, payroll clerk, and receptionist.

LaPlante’s musical journey began in her late teens when she formed the band Unicron with her brother, Jackson. Originally inspired by Rage Against the Machine, Unicron’s sound evolved into progressive metalcore, drawing influence from bands like Protest the Hero and Between the Buried and Me. In 2011, LaPlante met guitarist Mike Stringer during a performance with another local band, Fall in Archaea, and soon after, the two began both a musical and personal partnership.

In 2012, LaPlante joined the American metalcore band Iwrestledabearonce as their lead vocalist, replacing the original singer. She contributed to albums like Late for Nothing (2013) and Hail Mary (2015) before leaving the band in search of a new creative direction.

In 2017, LaPlante and Stringer founded Spiritbox, aiming to forge their own unique sound. Spiritbox released their self-titled EP in 2017, followed by Singles Collection in 2019, and their debut full-length album, Eternal Blue, in 2021. With the release of Tsunami Sea in March 2025, Spiritbox’s growing influence solidifies LaPlante’s position as a leader in the contemporary metal scene, pushing boundaries and blending metalcore, progressive metal, and djent with her distinctive vocal style.
