About Calum Hood
Calum Thomas Hood, born on January 25, 1996, in Mount Druitt, New South Wales, is the soulful bassist and vocalist behind the global sensation 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS). Of Scottish and Māori heritage, Calum grew up surrounded by creativity—his sister, Mali-Koa, also found her voice in music. His love for the arts took root early, but interestingly, his first passion was soccer. So much so, he was once invited to a professional training camp in Brazil. Still, music had a louder call.
During his school years at Norwest Christian College, Calum connected with Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford. The trio began posting song covers to YouTube in 2011, and soon after, Ashton Irwin joined them, forming the complete 5SOS lineup. Their chemistry was undeniable. Blending catchy pop melodies with edgy rock energy, the band quickly found global fame, breaking out with their hit “She Looks So Perfect” and later dominating charts with “Youngblood.”
Since their debut, 5SOS has released five studio albums and sold millions of records worldwide, becoming one of Australia’s most successful music exports. Calum’s deep, resonant bass lines and emotive vocals have been a key part of the band’s signature sound. Beyond the stage, he’s also penned songs for other artists, showcasing his range as a songwriter.
Grounded, passionate, and creatively driven, Calum Hood continues to evolve both as an artist and individual—proving that following your gut, even if it means leaving a soccer pitch behind, can lead to incredible places.
